In 2023, the key metaphor of our forum is the Russian avant—garde, as an atmosphere of manifestos, declarations, games, versatility and opportunities. But what is the avant-garde in general? Let's analyze one of the most famous art trends (using the example of fine art) of the beginning of the XX century in Russia, whose representatives are known all over the world.

The avant-garde or avant-gardism emerged in European art at the end of the XIX and the beginning of the XX centuries. We can name the main trends of the avant-garde and its names, but we cannot name common features among artists. For them, the main thing was the search for their own uniqueness and rejection of the past.

The avant—garde in the visual arts can be understood as an experiment with a concept, color and form. The Russian avant—garde is the generalizing name of innovative artistic movements of the early twentieth century, which proclaimed a decisive rejection of classical norms and principles of art. The works of Russian avant-gardists combined elements of various European trends: post-Impressionism, Fauvism, Cubism, expressionism, futurism and others.

According to art critics, in Russia the term «avant-garde» was first used by the Russian artist and critic Alexander Benois. In a review of the exhibition of the Union of Russian Artists of 1910, he divided all its participants into «avant-garde», «center» and «rearguard». Certainly, the avant-garde movement did not form a single style, no school included the word «avant-garde» in the name, and also this term was not used by art critics at all.

One of the most significant associations of the avant-garde was the society of artists «Jack of Diamonds», which was founded by Mikhail Larionov, Natalia Goncharova, Ilya Mashkov, Pyotr Konchalovsky and Aristarkh Lentulov.
