Yuri Alekseevich Gagarin (1936-1968) is a Russian pilot, cosmonaut, and the first man to conquer space. He was born on March 9, 1934 in Klushino of Smolensk Oblast. He started school in 1941, but because of the German occupation continued his study only in 1943. Later he studied at the trade school in Gzhatsk, industrial technical school in Saratov, where Yuri started attending a flying club and in a year took his first flight by Yak-18. In 1957, he graduated from the Orenburg flight school. In 1960, Y. A. Gagarin was recruited to the cosmonaut corps. April 12, 1961 the spaceship “Vostok” launched into space and orbited
the Earth.
“Orenburg gave me a lot: my family and the control over an airplane”, wrote
Y. A. Gagarin in his book “Doroga v kosmos”
(“A road into space”). Since 1955 to 1957, he was at the Orenburg flight school. There he met his future wife; there the life of the young family began. Yuri Alekseevich visited Orenburg after his flight, talked to the trainees of the only one in the country School of Young Cosmonauts. He is the Orenburg’s citizen
of honour.
